Side-walks for pedestrians

It remains a dream for Indonesians to have a clean and save pedestrian side-walks in their neighborhood. It is an aspiration to bring their kids and families during the weekend and walk down the side-walks safely.

In Jakarta, side-walks are not the save place for pedestrians. Motorcycles sprint on the side-walks, ignoring people and their own safety. Motorcycles become pushy most of the time and even honk to force pedestrians to move aside. On top of that, street-vendors occupy most of the part and make it more dangerous and hard for pedestrians to have adequate access to walk.

The appropriate side-walks in Jakarta are situated along business area like Jl. Jend Sudirman, Thamrin and Jl. Merdeka. Rasuna Said and Mega Kuningan are other area with adequate side-walks. However, those are very small area compared to millions of people who need the service and walk down the street everyday. Jakarta should build much more clean and neat side-walks.

Pedestrians deserve the rights to enjoy clean side-walks as reward for the tax they paid and as citizen of this megapolitan city. They also deserve safety. Authorities should enforce the law to protect people. They must make side-walks a save place for pedestrians by forbidding and punishing motorcycle that rush on the side-walks.
